cHRISTMAS 2015

I Realized I never made a note about ChristMas, I got Pokémon Gloves, Orange Knee long socks, A stormTrooper Swetshirt that zips all the way up over your face, and a Blue Plad Shirt. Also some small chocolates and a big box, stocking stuffers werein low supply this year but what i did get I like. I got A megablocks minion but it looks more like regular legos. Also my brothers and I each got a remote control helicopter andBB8 From The new Starwars. Some other starwars things I got were a pack of 4 pins like the Taking Back Sunday 1s ?Courtney picked me up aththeir concert last yea. Also a Starwars Charmbrqacelet. From each of my brotherws I got Ducky Pajamas with feet and a hood, A charmander winter Hat a Squirtle tin Waterbottle, yoda slippers and a rope or hempbraclet that has an ovle that says "keep calm and carrie on my wayword son. MyAlso on cd it says "the Starwars Oridigonal radio bradcasts." that's the trilogy 4 5 6. My aunt gave me A no needle knitting Kit and I cant wait to make a new phone case with it.Also this other kit with string to make braclets and things. Thhe night before We went to Church and to my grandma's house for a light dinner afterwords.I got movie money and an American Express gift Card from each omy uncles. Grandma and abunch of reletives cameover On Christmas so did Courtney, her sister and their parents. We planned on making it a Pajama Christmas because that's what Courtney and Alison wanted but it was too hot for my heavy red Flannels with the Scotty dogs/it ws 73 degrees. I ended up wairing a Pokémon Teashirt and caprees. We had a very good meal though We ate Ham, Turkey, stuffed shells that my mom made, Corn, Honeyglazed Carrots and Corn. Also a salad. For Dessert we got A cheesecake from the Cheese Cake factory like my dad and i have been getting the past few years (this year was pumpkin.) Also my neighbors from nextdoor brought over Cookies and somornies that they make every year. There were a few other things like little candies and cheese over all it was very good. The next day Rebecca came over and I gave her Pajamas with squirls in Santa hats. She gave me a jar with qahandle and straw. it is filled with hurshey kisses and has a chalkboard that says happy newyear. The next day Courtney's mom took us to see the new Starwars It was amazing. I wor my new sweatshirt ght my light saber of course. I hope next time I can go to the midnight showing I've never been to one. Although if they do another 7 pm that'll be awesome too.

Christmas movies!

I’ve been meaning to do a bunch of Christmas related posts like where the 12 days of Christmas comes from. Only the place I originally found that, coolquiz.com  apparently shutdown down and some Catholic websites I tried copying and pasting it from x-ed oud after or while copying. I came to the conclusion to write about movies while finding the Movie Prancer on ABC Family and remembering a conver sation I had with my friend Ashley K. She told me she saw it in school one year and “didn’t care for it.” I did some thinking and thought I wouldn’t have really liked it in 4^th or 5^th grade. (Think of yourself all hyped up on sugar and dyeing to get out of school, this happened to me in 12^th grade) But I Digress.

The rest of the world thinks you’re Crazy. In Prancer some Kids mad fun of Jessie and her dad told her to wake up and realize that Reindeer don’t fly. In polar express we don’t get an onscreen example of the world telling the main Character not to believe but he is Plagued with doubt.

    Both movies however have charactars who believe with out Question. The girl, who is never named in Polar Express is filled with wonder andis filled with Spi4rit. Not just about Presents, but for the food and Family, the helping of others and the general feeling of the time. This is what seperates her and got her chosen to board and marked as a leader on her ticket. 

    My point is that this Felling and belief goes far beyond Santa and Flying Reign deer. Aslife goes on there is pressure to believe or not to believe whether or it’s a spiritualbelief, or just in the good of people. Both charactars tell us that there is good in the world and not everything can beexplained by Science and logic. 

    During the year many people tend to forget this.  Multiple movies are here to remind us not just Christmas ones butthey are more likely and easier to spot. If you need a non Christmas example I suggest Bridge to TeraBithia or the Narnia series.

While reading how facebook caught on and became more popular, it is apparent to the reader how the perspective of the author is bias. The author complements Zukerburg numerous times, but rarely does so for the boys who collaborated with him. Some other things that would make a reader believe the author has a strong tie to Harvard. Some of these are the statement that High school is all about building a strong resume. This maybe true for a majority of students entering any number of collages, but Harvard is so hard to get excepted in to, one must have an out standing résumé. Another theme repeated multiple times in both the novel and film is the “Harvard connections” and “men of Harvard” In the world of the students image is everything and who you know is important. From my experience this not true of other schools, and I do not know anyone who attends a school that is so image conscious.. I also do not agree with the two degree concept. College campuses are so big that I do not believe everyone is connected by only person. This maybe true for the schools with in a school , like we have at Rutgers. Or maybe this just a mentality the author has from attending or studying Harvard.
Other things I noticed while reading “the facebook effect” is how building the webpage benefited the boys. Mark Zukerburg was not a people person. After Popularity of his creation spread, he had to become better at giving interviews and press conferences. A person can take a class on public speaking but this not a skill that can really be taught in classes. After much hard work and thinking Zukerburg was able to develop this skill because it would effect his business. Also, the facebook was something Zukerburg was passionate about. When promoting something that matters, a person is more likely to be a better speaker than, if they were giving a topic selected at random. The roommates of Zukerburg also benefited from the creation of facebook. None of these boys went to school for business, but or computer programming. After being handpicked by Zukerburg, they each quickly learned their given job.

The facebook was launched on February Forth 2004. The first 3 Accounts were test accounts. The next few were accounts belonging to Mark Zukerburg and the friends who helped him. At first the website was exclusive to students at Harvard.
When facebook was in its early days it seemed like a safer site because everyone needed a school email address to register. This meant anyone on facebook was guaranteed to be a student. The second reason it was safer in those days is everyone had to use their real name. Everyone was who they said they were. Now you can register from any email address and set a profile to any name. For example people have role-playing facebook accounts. If they want they can set their account a nick name or just first and middle names. People may do this because accounts are checked when applying for jobs. When comparing this, a person can really see how far the website has come in the past six or seven years.
What bothered me when reading this section of “the facebook effect”, is how it kept referring to dating , and underlying meanings about the phrase “poke”. Not everyone this age is looking for a quick hookup, like the novel suggests. Also the influencing sites, such as myspace, are used as dating pages. Users on myspace, are more likely to connect to friends and interest groups than use it as an alternative to something like match.com. I found that the author makes too many generalizations.

Mark Zukerburg created many websites before facebook was established. The first and most infamous was facemash. This was the site that created legal problems for Zukerburg. After those troubles were cleared up, He went right back to work creating the what would one day be face book. Some websites that were inspiration for face book were Friendster and buddy monster. Friend is described in “the face book effect” as a dating website, although its description sounds like a page to connect with old friends and make new ones. It is pretty much posting a profile and interests like other pages such as live journal, and myspace which is also given as an example in the novel. The other , Buddy monster is a page used with Aol Instant Messenger. Users can upload their buddy lists and compare them to see which friends they have in common and rank most popular users. This could also be used to make friends threw other friends. This idea would eventually be applied on face book when people would be able to find mutual friends on other profiles.

Before starting to read the facebook effect, I decided to think about how the stories of the book and the movie were different. I already knew from Class discussions that the book portrays Mark as a hero and the film portrays him as a Villon. I also found details in the reading that I do not remember from the film.
The film the social network never mentioned that Mark had siblings. I also do not remember the web page class connect. This was a way for students to see if cute girls or friends were in the class that they were taking. A student could also use this web site to plan their upcoming class season with their friends. This was likely to be in the film adaption but I can not recall it in the plot. Something else that was changed was facemash.
Facemash was an early web page invented by Mark zukerburg and his friends before facebook. In the film, this was used by the boys and their friends to rate girls. The film goes in to vivid description of Mark’s breakup with his girlfriend and a drunken rant he posted on his blog one night after breaking up with her. In the Novel, the author briefly states that there was a breakup and this left Zukerburg upset. The fact that users could compare the student’s pictures to farm animals was also glossed over in the novel. One other thing that the film changed was it’s version of facemash only used girls. The biography of facebook stated that facemash used both males and females. There is a statement saying how one boy was very happy when he read his picture was voted as acceptable. So far, Zukerburg is not painted as the vile crazy person that the film portrayed,. However, he is not described as a nice person you would be best friends with either. It does make him a little more relatable.

Today I finished my paper. Today was all about finding final support for my argument. At first I had to backtrack because I had a while since I last worked on the paper. After I found my place, I started to look for what Slate said about batteries. This took a while and I did not find an exact quote about plane batteries, but about E waste in general. I wrote about how the waste was shipped from America to around the world. Another topic I found that I included in my paper was the fact that most electronics do not last the full time they are built to last for. This could have two meanings. Either People are replacing them much faster than they should be. The other possibility is that the manufactioners have caught on to Americans’ need to constantly buy and replace items. This resulted in the manufactioners making products that last less than half the time they are supposed to. After this I tied everything together and concluded by saying the green movement is a good thing. It may be a good thing, but it is catching on gradually and probably not fully replace the American mentality of aiming for bigger and better things.

2 PAPER SETUP
Today is the second day that I have been working on my paper. I left off with the disposal of bathroom products like toilet paper and disposable woman’s products. Next I went into modern technologies like cell phones and computers. I used what Slate wrote to backup my writing on how wasteful Americans are. New technologies become a problem when people throw out the old ones. People are in a race to have the newest and best items. This is a problem because the old products are still good. I used this information to relate to the Green movement and the problem of throwing out electronics. I described how people would rather throw out their things than have out of date products. I tied this into recycling and how some people feel it is easier to access to just throw away simple items like bottles and cans. Finding good quotes became a problem so I used the inter net for backup information. I found a website but did not want to get in too deep because it would argue my point the other way. Tomorrow I plan on finding more quotes to support my statements on recycling. I will also bring up some new points, although I am not sure what those are yet. I believe I am halfway through, I have a good amount of work, but I need more support to my claims on just how much this effects the environment.

Today I started setting up my paper. The option I chose was the one on Made to Break. I am proving that America will continue on it’s path of wastefulness. According to Slade this what happen. I figure this because Slade is saying it is much easier to dispose than recycle in a more environmentally way. I started by writing my ideas in short paragraphs. After that, I looked threw the book to find quotes that backed up what I wrote so far. The introduction was full of good quotes. Tomorrow, I plan on making my paragraphs longer and finding more quotes. Next I will organize what I have written to make sure the order of what I wrote makes sense.

Current Event

For my current event I brought in an article about a cell phone with the Google locater ap. A guy who had the ap on his Smartphone, got his car stolen. While the car was taken the cell phone was inside the car. The man was able to use the internet and settings on his account to find his car and the feath.
I asked the class whether or not they felt this development in technology was a good one. On one hand the [person was able to recover his car and phone. On the other, this story could have gone the other way. If it did, the feath would have been able to take more from the victim. When people have these phones, they do a lot of personal stuff o n them. The feath could have accessed the victim’s bank account and other personal information.
When I asked the class what they though, this came up. We did discuss negative effects like this, but for the most part the class felt this was a good ap. If the person had not had this locater on his phone he may never have found his phone. He could have found his car and phone without it, but it would have taken much longer. It also came down to luck that he found his car but did not have any of his accounts hacked or information stolen. What I took from this piece of news is that ever new technology has its positive improvements, but also has a downside to the situations they are used in.

This book starts out with a summary about how America invents new tecnologies but then throws them away when something new, bigger and better comes along. Some examples of this would be televisions, phones, both cell phones and telephones, and anything electronic. All this wast is bound to impact the envirment. The book says we need to rethink how we manage this before the planet becomes a giant land fill. This is a problem, how ever there is something the book does not discuss.
There are green ways to recycle. Many times there are places that will take an old computer or phone that a person can donate when they get a replacement. One major technology that pollutes the envirment is batteries.
There is a green way to dispose and ricicle battries but it is hard to find places that do this. This is a problem because batteries power manythings found in households today. All the dead batteries thrown out every month can severly impact nature. People need to make axcess to green recicleing such as the disposal of batteries and electronic chips more available.

One problem that stands out in the world and Wikipedia is when Sanger was discriminating against the new comers to the site. People that are just starting out to a page are know as newbees, or nubs. Many times more experienced users are not so kind to newcomers, because they are believed to not know as much. This thought is a closed minded one. Like Jimbo Wales said, “we were all new at some point and with out new contributors the site can not be expected to grow” new users should be encouraged to contribute because the more users writing will give articles with more perspective. When Wales founded Wikipedia, this was his dream. He wanted an easy to use encyclopedia. When pop culture items appear in a source, there is bound to be users with differing opinions. What was eye opening was the offsets of Wikipedia. Conserveapedia was used to control information as much as it is used to learn things.
Another problem is news. When news first breaks, multiple users make entries on that topic. Some examples of this are, hurricane Katrina, September Eleventh, and the death of Tim Russard. The problem with news is somany people are writing on a topic and it is unclear if the topics are being properly edited. Another problem is when an event is old, such as Hurricane Katrina, after time people stop writing about it. If a person looks up a news event from over a year ago, they will probably find dead links, or information that is not updated or checked. This a side affect of everyday people writing news.

One topic brought up in The world and Wikipedia, is that the website is expected to replace newspapers some time in the future. The author does not expect this to happen for many years. Some reasons this is believed to happen are many authors can contribute and it is used by a wide audience. A positive thing that can come from the webpage replacing newspapers, is this will save many trees. If Wikipedia replaces traditional newspapers many good things can come about like people coming together to share and learn information, but it has many negative sides also.
Books and newspapers are put together formally. This by one or a few authors, and is strictly edited. On Wikipedia, anyone can write and anyone can edit. When it comes to important topics, such as wars, historical events, and people’s lives it is to easily miswritten. The book World and Wikipedia has many cases where deaths were falsely reported, or mysteriously predicted. People like reading the news where ever they are and when ever they want. Making Wikipedia our primary source for news, is good because people can take a portable device with them to axcess the internet. It can be a negative thing because newspapers are written for a specific area. Also reading the morning paper is a way to relax for some people, if it becomes completely digitized, it will just be another way society has become rushed and compact.
In traditional newspapers there sections, headlines, sports, comics, job listings. When a person goes to Wikipedia they will search for a certain topic. They only way they will flip to another is if they know they want to read something else, and what the other topic is. They also might find another linked to a topic they are currently reading. In an old fassion paper, the reader can find topics and articles they might never search for because it is right in front of them.
Switching from print news to internet news, will be very different. Some things will change for the better, and some changes will be negative. It is too mixed to decide to use one or the other. Readers should probably use both to stay well informed, and get the best information they can.

The World of Wikipedia starts off by giving an outline of how the website started. It gives examples of the first conversations on the page. The mane idea of the first half is how the Creator, Jimbo Wales wanted to make an easy access encyclopedia. This book gives examples of previous paper encyclopedias. What the reader is supposed to take away from this book is how information is controlled.
When Wales created the website Wikipedia, he wanted people to be able to access information from wherever they are. Some of the chapters in the book tell of a site called conserveapedia where information is shared, but controlled. What is sup prizing about this chapter is how kids are home schooled from the internet. The problem with this, is using pages like this to teach is uncertain. Pages like wiki, medi, or conservapedia are monitored, but they are still made by users. If people are us9ing them as a primary teaching source, they are taking the risk that what they are learning or teaching is not true.
The ideas in this book are what members of the groups learned when doing the project last week. A person can pick a topic and search but there is always the chance that what is posted on the page is inaccurate, or just not true. it

Today our group did our presentation. My group was me, Stephanie and Janet. Our topic was Assisted Suicide. We gave the description of Pad, Physician assisted Death and euthanasia. The difference is Pad, the doctor will give the injection, while the other, the patient will give themselves the lethal dose of medication. We found that this medical practice is aloud in states like , Montana and Washington. There were a number of Wikipedia sources on this topic.
There fifteen sources we found on Assisted Suicide. We opened all of them to follow the links in side. A few of these were primary sources, but most were secondary sources. The interesting thing about sources 2 and 15 were that they were dead sources. This is because neither had anything to do with the topic were investigating.
For the source found in the article euthanasia, only number1 is a primary source. The second threw fith sources were not very useful. One of these was a blog and tow others were election results. Another source was a journal article. Number5 had nothing to do with our topic at all. The rest of the sources, numbers 8-13 could not be found.
Our group found that the information was being presented in a balanced format , our team checked each source to establish whether it was in support or against PAD and euthanasia. What our group found is that the sources are balanced, half for and half against. We also found that Wikipedia is not enough information. The articles are good to explain what assisted suicide is, and the difference between PAD and euthanasia. The sources and links do not give enough information to write a paper or help some one who knows A person who wants to choose one of these options. What the members of the team found surprising was we had to do a great deal of information to find information on the Terry Schivo Case. Since it was fairly recent, one would think the Wikipedia page would have at least one mention to it, or a page with a link to some kind of information. The most important think team members should take from this project is that Wikipedia is not a place to solely base facts and information on. Our team believes that it is useful when introducing yourself or others to a topic, but only basic facts that can be easily chest should be taken seriously from the webpage.
